It’s festivities everywhere. Bright colours and fervour, with pleasantries exchanging hands and friendly hugs warming up the air.

Its the biggest festival, Diwali is here! Along with it comes the list of purchases. From mobile phones to sweets and clothes to cars, we have everyone picking up a stake this season. Some going bombastic and few sticking by buying with their small little pockets.

Festivals bring happiness and positivity around us, they tend to be short lived with us, for we hit the reality button. Diwali or for that matter, any festival comes on a date. Over the years, we have changed the paradigm of celebrations. Gone are the days when we lent a helping hand to folks at home. More for we could steal some of those savouries rather than help prepare. Today all we have to do is walk into the nearest store and viola we have everything packed. Cleaning our homes and offices used to be a collective effort, while today most of it is outsourced to the housemaid. Getting up early and dressing in the best of dresses was a ritual best kept for the festival, most tend to take the extended sleep as it’s a holiday.

All along while there would be many such small instances and memories that would fade away and new ones take its existence in the new world, we have forgotten the most important aspect of festivals. That’s putting our thought to it, celebrating #ThoughtfulDiwali. Ever wondered what would you gift your mother, when you are the best gift to her? What would one achieve by wishing everyone by forwarding the recycled festive messages, wouldn’t it be better to lift the phone and greet? Or for that matter get together your near and dear and loved ones and spend some quality time with them? Who cares for the worldy acquisitions, one should accumulate memories. Aren’t they the most important treasure to cherish?

As financial planners, one tends to and is always expected to generate the desired results via numbers. Help people achieve their goals financially. Although we do things to the best of our ability and as ethically as our profession entails us to demonstrate, the real returns comes by investing your true self amongst people whom you love and care. These returns are ones which can never get replicated by anyone except you. The next time, while you get to listing down your spends, spare a thought and jot down your ideas of a #ThoughtfulDiwali and share to implement it with the younger generation too.
